Empowered Women, Empower Women: A Sustainable Fashion Love Story

It all started with a deep feeling of frustration for me- a first-generation immigrant turned Harvard graduate. I was attempting to find a place to purchase ethically made and sustainable products, especially those from female and minority founders. Unfortunately, such a place simply did not exist in the online space. So, being the problem-solver I am, I set out to change that, and StoreyLine was born.

Across the Pacific Ocean, Stephanie Srikandi, half Dutch half Indonesian globetrotter, was building a sustainable fashion empire in Bali. She developed a manufacturing studio to create high-fashion meets streetwear brand, "This is a Love Song" (TIALS). All of her clothing is fair trade, and all of her employees are fairly paid. She touches the product from design all the way through shipment, allowing her to sell products with confidence that they're ethically made.

We were making impacts on our own simultaneously,  what might happen if our paths crossed?

As luck would have it, that is precisely what happened earlier this year. After interacting on social media, we realized we aligned on our shared mission so well that we quickly partnered, and TIALS became one of the first clothing lines offered on StoreyLine's marketplace.

In the world of e-commerce and fashion, life often feels competitive and stressful. Consumers rarely know who made their clothes or even where they were made. General trends have leaned towards convenience and "fast fashion." The industry is still vastly male-dominated, even though females are  the primary consumers.

Here are five fast facts about "fast fashion" from the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe to keep in mind when shopping from any of those "shiny" online retailers:

  1. The fashion industry creates 20% of the world's water waste.
  2. Producing a single cotton shirt requires nearly 714 gallons of water.
  3. We can thank apparel manufacturing and raw material sourcing for 10% of the world's carbon emissions.
  4. 2.1 billion tons of waste are created each year from clothing thrown out by consumers.
  5. 1 in 6 people, 80% of whom are women, work in the fashion industry and are generally overworked and underpaid.

However, change is coming, and we realized that when women radically support one another in both business and friendship, that success and impact can multiply tenfold.

Today, we are so excited to launch the first curated collection of StoreyLine exclusive products from This Is A Love Song. This line represents what two women can accomplish when we set out to make a difference in the world. Not only does it deliver clothing for the boardroom and the bedroom, but it also delivers the confidence that comes with wearing something that did not harm the planet, its animals, or its people. Each person who purchases from StoreyLine x TIALS is voting with their wallet. When you wear this line, you're voting to support female founders creating ethical products made of sustainable materials. Does it get any sexier than that?!
