Celebrate Black History Month with some of StoreyLine’s Favorite Black-Owned Brands!

One of the most important goals here at StoreyLine is to empower diverse consumer product founders to tell their unique stories, which are often not typically heard or amplified. We also strive to support brands that challenge the status quo and are powered by great social missions. February celebrates Black History Month, and black-owned businesses make up a large part of the community that StoreyLine is looking to support. Black figures throughout history have worked hard to challenge society and ultimately change humankind for the better. Without the inspiring efforts made to defy the unfair standards upheld in past times, the United States may not have given equal rights to all, made it to the moon, or had an African American president in office. To honor Black History Month this year, we would like to showcase some fantastic Black-owned companies making massive headway towards improving the lives of the African American community and the overall well-being of the entire planet!

Each year Black History Month is given an overall theme that aids in focusing the public’s attention on that subject. The themes presented each year also help reflect how African Americans in the United States have viewed themselves, the influence of social movements on racial ideologies, and the aspirations within the black community. The theme of Black History Month 2022 is Black Health & Wellness, which looks to bring awareness to how healthcare is often underserved for African Americans but also looks to call attention to all the incredible strides being made by those within the medical community. [ASALH.org] This year's theme also encompasses the importance of physical health and emotional and mental health awareness. This theme is especially predominant now during the unprecedented times that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought to this world.

Health and wellness is a subject the StoreyLine team has a strong fondness for, and we are always looking to improve the wellness of all by highlighting our incredible brands. So, to highlight some of our favorite black entrepreneurs in the health and wellness space, we’re sharing the Black-Owned Box by True Moringa.  It features some of our favorites from PiperWai, Organic Bath Co., Pholk Beauty, and True Moringa themselves. The box includes a Moringa-based face, hair, body oil, a natural PH-balancing deodorant, organic body butter, and a pore-cleansing Teatox mask.

The excellent Moringa multi-use body oil is a nourishing cold-pressed oil that can outperform a series of reputable oils like argan, shea, and jojoba. This product comes from True Moringa, a company that started in Ghana, marketing the wildly powerful Moringa tree. This tree has incredible benefits and contains more iron than spinach, more protein than yogurt, and more calcium than milk! Before True Moringa, farmers had no way to earn a living cultivating Moringa due to lack of access to a market. However, with the help of this great company, they have helped over 5000 farming families increase their income by 4-10 times as much as before and plant over 2 million Moringa trees. True Moringa’s mission is to make wellness and staying healthy simple, affordable, and accessible.

The natural PH-balancing deodorant utilizes activated charcoal and coconut oil to wick away moisture, neutralize odors and leave your skin feeling amazing, all without harmful aluminum. This product was created by PiperWai, a company striving to make personal hygiene products that are both for you and good for the environment. Their journey started when they discovered how useless so many natural deodorants are and how much plastic waste from personal products ends up in the oceans. So they began crafting their own natural formula with earth-friendly packaging right at their kitchen table and eventually made it to ABC’s Shark Tank to pitch their product. As a black and female-owned brand, diversity is critical to them. They want their products to reach anyone working to create a more sustainable lifestyle and help reduce unnecessary waste in the world.

The box also includes a super-concentrated 100% organic plant-based body butter, perfect for nourishing and protecting your skin. This product comes from the Organic Bath Co., a husband-and-wife-run company that creates products with only clean and safe ingredients. The idea for the brand came about after the co-founder had a horrible allergic reaction to her favorite conventional beauty product. Their company is driven by astonishing research that states women—particularly women of color—are often marketed toxic personal care products. Due to this discovery, they are committed to creating unisex products that include only the essentials and absolutely nothing harmful or synthetic.

The final product included in this fabulous box is the Moringa Pore Teatox Mask, a chlorophyll and antioxidant-loaded face mask powder able to unclog pores and give you a fresh spa facial feel right at home. This product is crafted by Pholk Beauty, a company based on its founder's love for plants, clean beauty products, and rich African American history. The beauty rituals of Black women that date back centuries inspired Pholk Beauty to build a brand that could feed the skin and be used as a healing agent. The team has a diverse background, with members coming from all around the world, which motivates the brand to incorporate the various skincare routines of cultures across the globe.

On top of all these spectacular staples to add to your skincare routine, 20% of this box’s sales also go towards benefiting a multitude of worthy causes, including the Equal Justice initiative, Black Soil, Plastic Bank, & Village Savings & Loan Project! These charities look to empower the Black community and strive to make the world around us better for everyone. The Equal Justice Initiative is committed to ending mass incarceration and economic and racial injustice in the United States. Black Soil’s vision is to help foster a more significant market share for black farmers, introduce opportunities in agriculture, and promote self-sufficiency. Plastic Bank is building and nurturing operations to reduce plastic waste in the world’s oceans. Finally, the mission behind the Village Savings & Loan Project is to assist impoverished households in managing their financial resources.

In addition to the brands included in the Black-Owned Box, StoreyLine has also partnered with a plethora of other fantastic health & wellness-centered brands that are either BIPOC owned or create products explicitly dedicated to darker skin tones.

Emanate Essentials is a brand that constructs handmade, natural body care & aromatic products that will undoubtedly elevate your self-care routine. The founder believes that every person should prioritize wellness & practice self-care, which is why they donate natural soaps and other self-care essentials to women’s shelters.

Shayde Beauty is a company explicitly built on the concern that a lack of products made expressly for melanin-rich skin. Melanin-rich skin is more prone to inflammation, which can result in dark spots and hyperpigmentation, and most products on the market aren’t able to effectively address these skin concerns. Shayde Beauty set out to supply the underserved market with antioxidant-rich, vegan and cruelty-free products tailored to their needs.

As seen in Goop, the mother-daughter owned brand Sade Baron was created with one simple goal in mind, to develop high-quality vegan body products packed with nutrient-rich superfoods that are good for both your skin and our planet. Founder Rachel Lambo—the daughter in the mother-daughter duo—gave us some insight into what makes their soaps essential for great skin-care. “Soaps have essential fatty acids, and [Sade Baron soap] doesn't strip skin of those acids; it helps regrow skin cells,” Lambo said. On top of being great for your skin, Sade Baron products are also ethically processed and made with eco-friendly, sustainable packaging.

Black female-owned candle company, The Noble Brand, was founded on the fundamental idea of discovering beauty & value within yourself. They utilize non-toxic, clean, hand-poured fragrances to aid in elevating one's self-care routine. Their line of stunning Goddess Candles accentuates the beauty of the female body in a multitude of shapes and sizes. It helps to channel one’s inner goddess by highlighting the characteristics of some goddesses from around the world. The Noble Brand believes that everyone is royalty in their own right and should wear their crown with immense pride!

All of these brands, organizations, and charities are looking to improve the health & wellness of the African American community and the entire planet. As a team of women with a minority founder, StoreyLine is passionate about appeasing the unrest occurring within our country. We are outraged and heartbroken by what’s happening and want to channel that outrage into action and change. Our mission deliver happiness on mission-driven gift at a time. We are passionate about amplifying diverse brands fueled by incredible social change.  We encourage you to seek out those stories not often amplified, educate yourself on African American history, and support black-owned businesses to make the world around us a better place to live!
